- Coseley Baths Wall of Shame
- Coseley, The Black Country, England, United Kingdom
- A memorial to a much loved public swimming pool, which was recently demolished by order of Dudley Council's controlling group (Conservative) on the pretext of disputed claims of structural and commercial unviability. All this, despite the willingness of Save Coseley Baths campaigners to work with Dudley Council to the point of being willing to put the building right and run it as a trust.
The Coseley Baths catchment area (Coseley and Sedgley districts) still needs a full-sized public pool. Coseley, in particular, is a deprived area with high incidences of obesity and diabeties.
If any of the wealthier of our American cousins wanting to do something for "the old country" would like to help us buy the land and build a new pool we would be extremely grateful.

The contrasting fortunes of Hilton Hall - an example to us all*
Hilton Hall is the sister building of Coseley Swimming Bath, having been designed by the same architects' practice (Scott & Clark of Wednesbury) as the other of Coseley Council's major post-war public buildings, and opened a year after in 1964.
In 2009, while Dudley Council were busily ignoring every opportunity to save Coseley Baths, Wolverhampton Council began their long-term lease of Hilton Hall to a community trust whose work to restore the building to usable condition culminated in the installation of a new sign in February this year.
In this same month, demolition workers took-over Coseley Baths!

ReplyDeleteI learned to swim in those baths in 1964, while attending Mount Pleasant Primary School, between the ages of 8 & 9.

spent many a happy hour or several there in the early / mid sixties. Their canteen did the best tea and toast ever.
